Turn-key for Industrialisation toward Biotechonomy

One of the roadmaps towards a biotechonomy is through launching The Biotechonomy Pilot Programme (BTEPP) under Biotechnomy Council. UNDP partners with the Yuai World Foundation to proposes establishing the Biotechnomy Council.

Anji County, Bamboo Forest

Anji County in China is known for its extensive bamboo forests, which provide livelihoods for many, including about 100,000 people in the bamboo sector. The UNREDD Programme has conducted missions to China, including visits to Anji, to learn from its successful forestry development, particularly focusing on the commercial potential of bamboo as a non-timber forest product.

Anji, known as “China’s Bamboo Town,” has a total of 166,549 acres of bamboo forests, and its associated industrial output is worth close to RMB 20 billion.

In recent years, Anji has actively applied bamboo in construction, decoration, furniture, packaging, textiles, and disposable products to promote “Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic.”

On the R&D side, the Anji County government has initiated several crucial bamboo industry research projects, from simple bamboo tableware manufacturing to extracting bamboo cellulose and lignin to create such products as bamboo film bags and bamboo straws. A bamboo industry research institute also was launched to overcome the challenges faced in bamboo processing and production and to increase supply, creating “Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic” to accelerate market penetration.
